Its not safe poking around inside a dogs ears, if you go too deep you could injure the dog, and cause further infection.

Knowing where in the ear to stop and let the vet take over, calls for a brief view of canine anatomy.

First is the external ear, the part that protrudes from the side of the head :) keep the hair short, and inspect regular for scratches, dirt or anything that looks unusual.

The ear canal descends vertically before taking a bend for to the ear drum. Inside the eardrum is the middle ear with its three little bones that increase the force of sound vibrations and another, smaller membrane called the oval window, also a sound amplifier that leads to the inner ear.

Don't go anywhere near the ear drum, if you cant see anything in the inside of the ear, but it looks red, take your Westie along to a vet for a thought check of the ears.
