Rabies
Cause,
Rabies is a fatal infection. Transmission,
transmitted through the saliva of many animals, Foxes are the most frequent
carriers of infection in Europe, followed by dogs and cats and small rodents.
Incubation period,
The time between infection and positive signs being shown may be very long (several
months) but can be as short as 3 weeks
Major signs,
Rabies in animals takes two forms, dumb or furious rabies. Rabies can change the
personality of wild or ferocious animals, making them become affectionate and seek human
company, while normally quiet animals will become savage. The eyes become staring and the
jaws fixed and paralyzed, drooling copious saliva.
Dogs tend to hide away
from light and are extremely dangerous to approach. Death is usually preceded by paralysis
and coma. In most countries of the world, rabies control is mandated by local regulations
and involves guardians securing veterinary vaccinations for pet animals to prevent
the occurrence of the disease. The UK six months quarantine has been law for
over 100 years, but is now changed.
