Addison's disease

Addison's disease comes from a failure of the adrenal cortex to produce aldosterone, cortisol and corticosterone. The loss of aldosterone is most important. Aldosterone is responsible for maintaining sodium and potassium in the body.

Signs
Anorexia, vomiting, weakness, dehydration, depression and weight loss, potentially fatal heart abnormalities may emerge if the disease is not treated.
Diagnosis
Blood count and sodium and potassium levels should be tested.
Treatment
Treatment consists of medication and periodic blood testing to maintain the chemical levels in the body.
