Westie Foot Care

Take a good look at the pads make sure there are no sores, examine in-between the pads for lumps, if you spot any foreign objects see if you can easily remove them. Take care not too tug hard on a trapped grass seed, it may be like a fishing hook, deigned to go in but not come out.

If walking conditions are bad, why not invest in some boots for the dog, in winter give the dogs feet a wash in warm water this will remove any salts, then finish with a coat of Vaseline or a dog beeswax available at pet stores.

Westie's lick their paws quite a lot, the hair on the feet will turn brown from being bleached by the dogs saliva. However there is a noticeable difference to the Westie cleaning and something that is irritating them. If your Westie seams to be bothered by something and you cant see anything, take him along to a vet.

Finally, Trim the hair away with a blunt nose scissors, no need to remove it all just shorten it to within 1/8 of an inch or so. Take extra care not to cut too close and nip the skin. Always finish off with a treat and a big fuss, the more praise you give the better the dog will feel.

Huh, those  battery operated nose clippers are very good for this job !
