Tablets

The tablet may be to large in size, If you need to cut the tablet use a sharp knife and slowly press down onto the tablet until it snaps. Some tablets have a hard coating, when they are cut the edges are very sharp and can easily scratch your Westie's mouth or throat when he swallows.

Use a knife and scrape it along the edge of the tablet, removing the sharp edges from along the face and sides all around the cut edge until smooth. Once the sharp edges have been removed, your ready for the next step.

Done professionally this should not cause any discomfort to your Westie at all, in fact he should think you have just checked his mouth as usual and the praise that follows is what he is waiting for.

Using your left hand on the upper jaw and your right hand on the lower jaw, gently open the mouth, your Westie should respond by opening his mouth wide, if he does not, then your previous training on examining his mouth has not been perfected. Take your thumb out immediately and the Dog will close his mouth, follow up by gently rubbing the dogs throat up and down a few times to induce swallowing.

Some people feel they cannot do this at all, and need to use other methods. Wrapping the tablet in a piece of cheese is far easier, Westie's are smart and will spit it out, so trick them will a piece of cheese first.
