Parasites
A parasite is an organism that spends a significant portion of its life
in or on the living tissue of a host organism and which causes harm to the
host without immediately killing it.
The harm caused to a dog by a parasite can take many forms, including
various specialized types of tissue damage, to more subtle effects such as
modification of host behaviour.
Intestinal parasites of dogs are potential health hazards for humans, too.
If hookworm larvae penetrate the skin they can cause "cutaneous larval
migrans", a potentially serious and scarring inflammation results.
The first indication that a dog is infected with some type of parasite
is, very often, the presence of something in the dog's feces. If your dog
passes anything unusual in its feces, Collect It, your vet will usually find
it more helpful to see what was in your pet's feces than to listen to your
description of it.
