Never
pull any of the pups out. The bitch should tear open the
sac surrounding the pup at once to release the puppy and begin to lick it clean
and dry. If the bitch cannot do this, you must help her, hold the puppy upside
down to drain any fluid from the lungs. A further expelling movement should bring the placenta
(after birth), don't be surprised if the bitch eats this. The puppy should already be detached from the placenta
and the cord severed by the bitch. If this has not happened use a
sterile scissors and cut the cord 2 inches from the puppies tummy,
taking care not to pull on it. Make a note of every placenta that is passed, there
should be one for every pup. A retained placenta can be dangerous.
