It is wise to have the vet check your bitch and litter as soon as possible, some vets will prefer that this is carried out at the surgery, however I recommend you have them visit you at home as soon as possible. Taking your pups into a surgery where there may be infected dogs waiting for treatment is not recommended.

If you need to break the sac yourself, do so with your hands and gently rub the pup in a soft towel. The afterbirth attached to the puppy by the umbilical cord should follow each puppy. If the mother does not bite at the cord, take over the job yourself. Cut the cord two inches from the pups body with a scissors that has been sterilized. The cord will dry up and fall off in a few days.
