Roundworm
Dipylidium caninum, This worm is a segmented tapeworm which occurs in the intestine of the dog.
It can grow up to 50cm in length , the head of this worm attaches its self to
the wall of the intestine. Each segment of the worm will contain maturing eggs,
it is rare to see a full tapeworm in faeces but individual segments may be noticed
around the dogs anus or the dogs coat or bedding.
Fleas are a necessary part of
the life cycle of this worm. Flea larvae swallow eggs shed by dogs and these mature
as the flea develops. Any flea eaten by the dog will release the worm larvae
into its intestine where they will once more mature into adult worms.
Any dog infected by these worms will develop diarrhoea and will have poor growth.
Your vet will prescribe a specific remedy for this tapeworm according to its
weight and age. Maintain a regular campaign against fleas on the dog and around
your home.
